People who are big fans of Hollywood movies and even those who do not know who Marilyn Monroe is. She was one of the most iconic actresses of the 20th century. Marilyn was also one of Hollywood’s most marketable stars. Her memorable leading roles include the ones in Niagara, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and How to Marry a Millionaire.

In the mid-20th century, she became one of the most popular sex symbols. Considering these facts, you won’t be surprised to know that she attracted rich and famous men. Here we’ve listed some of the famous men, on whom she had cast a spell during those times:

1. Joe DiMaggio

Her marriage to this retired American baseball centre fielder in 1954 was a major news item. He was a great admirer of the acting prowess and intelligence of Marilyn. However, their relationship was troubled from the beginning owing to his controlling attitude and jealousy.

Immediately after the famous skirt-blowing scene being filmed, a violent fight occurred between the two. DiMaggio was of the opinion that she was very sweet and vulnerable. He also stated that this made it very easy for people to take advantage of her. They got divorced just nine months after their marriage.

2. John F. Kennedy

Marilyn’s alleged affair with the then President of the United States was among the most significant aspects of her life. According to the rumours, their affair began with her performance of the song ‘Happy Birthday, Mr President’. She drew attention with her beige skintight dress, which was covered in rhinestones. She sang this song at the early birthday celebration of the President at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Her smoky, breathy voice made the simple tune of a birthday song sound a bit risque. No one ever knew what happened between these two famous personalities. Some were convinced that they had an affair and some didn’t believe something like that ever happened. Nevertheless, their relationship had a long-lasting hold on the public imagination. The rumours continue today.

3. Robert F. Kennedy

Even the second popular member of the Kennedy household was not spared. According to one of the biographers of Marilyn Monroe, she did have an affair with Robert F. Kennedy. The FBI also released a file that warned him about a book that would talk about their affair. One of the most substantial pieces of evidence is a letter that Marilyn received from Jean Kennedy Smith.

She was the sister of Robert F. Kennedy. The letter provides evidence that Jean Kennedy Smith was aware of the relationship between her brother and Marilyn. It also hints at the fact that the Kennedy family approved of their relationship.

4. Anton LaVey

He was among the key figures of the 1960s counterculture. LaVey founded the Church of Satan. It embodied the interest in non-Abrahamic religions and the Sexual Revolution. Anton LaVey was a born showman and his showmanship involved lying about certain things. He claimed that he had an affair with Marilyn Monroe.

According to his fellow Satanists, his claims were fabricated. Apparently, LaVey was obsessed with Marilyn. He also befriended Jayne Mansfield, who was another blonde actress of the era. She was often compared to Marilyn Monroe.

Despite having just 29 films to her name, Marilyn Monroe left her mark in the world of cinema. Her blondness, attractive curves, and that mischievous pout continue to mesmerize her fans worldwide. Among the most memorable aspects of her career in films are the costumes that she wore.

Designer William Travilla often used high-quality materials with vibrant colours to put her in the spotlight. Here we present some of the famous costumes worn by the blonde bombshell:

1. The white dress

This is, perhaps, the most iconic of all the costumes that film actresses have worn. Marilyn Monroe appeared in this dress in the movie The Seven Year Itch. It had a plunging neckline, bareback, and an extra-large skirt. William Travilla had designed this dress exclusively for the film.

In the film, Marilyn allows the air from the metro to blow her skirt in a floating motion. This scene was made memorable with the two kisses between Tom Ewell and her. Well-complemented with white heeled sandals, this dress mirrored the personality of Marilyn.

2. The fuchsia dress

In the film How to Marry a Millionaire, she appears dressed in a fuchsia satin one-shoulder dress. This happens while Lauren Bacall and Betty Grable are getting ready in the powder room. Yet another brilliant work of designer William Travilla, this dress is among the several iconic outfits in the film.

Some of them include a white pencil dress with a fur stole and a white dressing gown. All the costumes that Marilyn wore in this film is a testament to mid-20th century fashion.

3. The pink dress

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was released in 1953 and featured several musical numbers. Among them was the immensely popular ‘Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend’. It showed Marilyn Monroe in her beautiful pink dress. She follows a procession of dancers moving in their flouncing dresses and sings this famous song.

Her pink bustier dress was made even more attractive with the evening gloves. Her fellow characters and audience are charmed by the radiance on her face. The original costume for this song was intended to be a lingerie outfit. The pink dress was designed at the last minute by William Travilla.

4. The mauve sweater

Marilyn showed that she can be ravishing even in the most ordinary outfits. The mauve sweater that she wore in Let’s Make Love made her look absolutely gorgeous. Accompanying this cable knit sweater is a pair of black tights. She plays Amanda Dell in this movie, whom Jean-Marc Clement meets when he arrives in New York.

He is there to watch the rehearsals of a satirical play, which is based on his life. In the scene, he unexpectedly comes face-to-face with this ravishing beauty. Let’s Make Love was released in 1960 and was Marilyn Monroe’s last musical performance.

5. The golden dress

William Travilla allowed his imagination to run wild in the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. He was inspired by the blonde bombshell’s alluring curves. It led him to create yet another fascinating outfit in the form of the famous golden dress. It was visible only for a few moments in the film but was truly a cinematic masterpiece. The designer had stitched it onto her body, causing it to drape her curves perfectly.

Between 1946 and 1961, Marilyn Monroe appeared in 29 films. Her major breakthrough came in the form of three films released in 1953. They were Niagara, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and How to Marry a Millionaire. After these three films, she became the most recognizable person in the United States.

The most famous scene of her career was the air blowing up her skirt in The Seven Year Itch. However, in the first few years after her brief career in modelling, she appeared in minor roles. Here are some of her earliest films:

1. Dangerous Years

This American drama film was released in 1947 and was directed by Arthur Pierson. It starred Ann E. Todd and Billy Halop. Marilyn Monroe made her first on-screen appearance in this film as Evie, the waitress. In recent times, this film is mostly sought out for Marilyn’s first onscreen performance. It had received a poor critical reception upon its release.

2. Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay!

Written and directed by F. Hugh Herbert, this film was released in 1948. The screenplay was adapted from George Agnew Chamberlain’s novel of the same name. It is about two antagonist stepbrothers who live with their mother on a mid-western farm.

One of them works with a neighbouring farmer. He buys a pair of mules for the farmer and must learn to train them. Both of these brothers are in love with the farmer’s daughter and have to compete for her affections. Marilyn played the role of Betty in this film, which was hardly a two-second role.

3. Love Happy

Love Happy starred the Marx Brothers and was their 13th and final film. This musical comedy was directed by David Miller and released in 1949 by United Artists. It features a walk-on by Marilyn Monroe, who was relatively unknown at the time.

It is regarded as the weakest movie of Marx Brothers by critics and fans. Years later, Groucho Marx described Love Happy as a terrible movie. He praised Marilyn for the lasting impression she had made during her screen test.

4. A Ticket to Tomahawk

A western musical comedy film directed by Richard Sale, A Ticket to Tomahawk was released in 1950. In this film, Marilyn Monroe appeared in one of her earliest roles. She played the role of Clara in this film. Also starring in the film is a steam locomotive known as ‘Emma Sweeny’.

It was a ten-wheeler built-in 1899 by Schenectady Locomotive Works. It was dressed up with headlight, false smokestack, and other parts to appear older in the film. The wooden model of this steam locomotive was put on display later in Jackson, California.

5. The Asphalt Jungle

Released in 1950, this is a heist film directed by John Huston. It is based on a novel of the same name, written by W.R. Burnett. The film had four Academy Awards nominations. It narrates the story of a jewel robbery that takes place in a Midwestern city. The film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 2008. Marilyn Monroe appears in one of her earliest roles in The Asphalt Jungle. According to MGM, the film made a profit of only $40,000.

Born Norma Jeane Mortenson on the 1st of June, 1926, Marilyn Monroe is known as the ‘blonde bombshell’. She was among the most popular sex symbols of the mid-20th century. Even today, she is regarded as a major icon of popular culture.

Marilyn was ranked sixth by the American Film Institute among the greatest female screen legends from Hollywood’s Golden Age. During her film career, her private life received much attention and was highly publicized.

Early years

Marilyn was born to Gladys Pearl Baker at the Los Angeles County Hospital. Her mother belonged to a poor Midwestern family. She worked at Consolidated Film Industries as a film cutter. When Gladys was 15 years of age, she married John Newton Baker.

He was nine years her senior and was an abusive man. Their marriage didn’t last long and she successfully filed for divorce. Baker kidnapped their two children who were granted her custody. He then moved to Kentucky with them.

Modelling and her first film

On the 19th of June, 1942, Marilyn married James Dougherty just after she turned 16. She became a housewife, but she experienced extreme boredom. Dougherty was listed in the Merchant Marine in 1943. In 1944, he was sent to the Pacific for two years. Marilyn started working at the Radioplane Company, where she met a photographer called David Conover.

She began modelling for him and signed a contract in 1945 with the Blue Book Model Agency. She was featured mostly in men’s magazines. Eventually, she straightened her hair and dyed it blonde to increase her chances of being employable. As her husband was against her career, she divorced him in September 1946. A year later, she got her first film role in Dangerous Years.

Fame in Hollywood

After her bit roles in a few films, she emerged as a sex symbol after her major releases. By 1953, she was one of the most bankable performers in Hollywood. Among her major films was Niagara, which featured her as a femme fatale.

In Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, she grabbed the role that was originally intended for actress Betty Grable. This film was among the biggest box office successes of 1953. In the same year, her third movie called How to Marry a Millionaire was released. The film was also a great box office success.

Career decline

During the filming of The Misfits, her health declined. She became severely addicted to drugs and was in a hospital detox for a week. Upon its release, The Misfits failed at the box office and got mixed reviews. Later, she spent four weeks in a hospital for depression and was helped by Joe DiMaggio, her ex-husband. In the spring of 1962, she returned to the public eye and began shooting for Something’s Got to Give

Death

Marilyn lived in Brentwood, a neighbourhood in Los Angeles, during her final months. On the evening of the 4th of August, 1962, her housekeeper was staying overnight at her home. The housekeeper Eunice Murray woke up at 3:00 am on the 5th of August and felt something was wrong.

She saw light coming from under the door of Marilyn’s bedroom but was unable to get a response. Psychiatrist Ralph Greenson was called, who broke into the bedroom through a window. Marilyn was found dead in her bed. The cause of death was reported as acute barbiturate poisoning.

Marilyn Monroe has continued to rule the hearts of millions even after so many years of her death. Despite being quite a complicated woman, she was truly charming and intriguing. Although she didn’t have a good background, she rose to fame and became known across the world. Many wonders where she’d be today if she continued acting and hadn’t died at the age of 36.

Maybe she would’ve continued acting and might’ve even enjoyed an Oscar-winning career. There are many things about her that would remain a mystery. However, there are some interesting and lesser-known facts about her that everyone must know:

1. She was well-read

Marilyn Monroe owned over 400 volumes of books at the time of her death. This included many first editions. Her bookshelf was quite impressive and fascinating. She was very fond of photographs among the many thousands that showed her reading.

Once a director had found her reading Letters to a Young Poet by R.M. Rilke. He curiously asked her how she had chosen it. She admitted that she went to the Pickwick bookstore on nights when she had nothing else to do. Then she opened books at random. Once she liked a page or paragraph from the book, she’d buy it.

2. Marilyn was not comfortable in front of the camera

The fact that she was an experienced actress didn’t make her camera-friendly. Don Murray, an Oscar-nominated actor had worked with her in Bus Stop. He had noted that when she was in front of the camera, she was never fully comfortable.

This was extremely surprising, given the fact that she was a talented actress. Don Murray further stated that she would forget many of the mechanical techniques. In his opinion, this showed her lack of confidence despite being loved by the camera.

3. Her first marriage was arranged

Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jean Baker. She was frequently in state care, foster homes, and with several family friends as a child. When she was a child, her mother and her father had been committed to a psychiatric facility. If Marilyn had not married, she would have ended up in an orphanage.

When she was 15 years of age, she was staying with a family friend called Grace Goddard. A 20-year-old James Dougherty was considered for an arranged marriage. Dougherty later said that Marilyn was awfully young, but they talked and got along pretty well.

4. No one believed Gladys Baker was her mother

Her mother, Gladys Baker, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. As she was frequently in and out of psychiatric care, she took Marilyn to a foster family. For the rest of her childhood, she was in several foster care homes and orphanages.

As a result, she never had a close relationship with her mother. When Gladys Baker told everyone that Marilyn Monroe was her daughter, no one believed her. They dismissed what she told, thinking that it was one of the delusions resulting from her schizophrenia.

5. Her glow on camera was not quite natural

Marilyn Monroe applied a layer of Vaseline or Nivea Creme before putting on her makeup. She believed it would give her an extraordinary glow on film. She also stayed out of the sun as far as possible. As she liked to feel blond all over, she was against a deep tan. She had once said that sun-tanned skin wasn’t that attractive or even healthier.

Anyone who looks unbelievably similar to an A-list Hollywood star would get noticed. However, the ones who look exactly like a globally renowned actress would certainly be at an advantage. This is exactly what happened with actress Susan Griffiths. Over the course of her decades-long career, she made a name for herself as a Marilyn Monroe impersonator.

Since the 1980s, she has appeared in many films, television series, advertisements, and corporate events. In almost all of them, she appeared as Marilyn Monroe. Here are some of the best films and television series that featured her as Marilyn:

1. Marilyn and Me

This American television film was released in 1991. It showcases the life of an American writer called Robert Slatzer. He claimed to have married Marilyn Monroe on the 4th of October 1952 in Mexico. There’s no proof that this wedding actually took place.

Slatzer had said that he met the iconic actress when she had just started acting. In the film, their secret affair goes through several ups and downs. This is mainly owing to the circumstances Marilyn finds herself in while balancing her career and her love life.

2. Pulp Fiction

Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, this neo-noir black comedy crime film was released in 1994. It starred John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Bruce Willis. The film narrates several stories of crime in Los Angeles. Quentin Tarantino had written this film in 1992 and 1993.

3. Dark Skies

It was pitched by the producers’ Brent Friedman and Bryce Zabel. In October 2007, it was announced that Dark Skies would be made available on DVD. This was the result of many years of fan campaigns. The series was finally released on six DVDs in the United States.

4. Growing Pains

This American television sitcom ran for seven seasons spanning 166 episodes. It was created by the television producer and writer, Neal Marlens. Growing Pains made its debut on the 24th of September, 1985 on ABC.

For the final season, a new cast member was added. It was the homeless teen Luke Brower, which was played by Leonardo DiCaprio. This sitcom is about the Seaver family, which resides in Huntington, New York.

5. Quantum Leap

Starring Scott Bakula as Dr Sam Beckett, Quantum Leap is an American science-fiction television series. It was originally aired from the 25th of March 1989 to the 5th of May 1993 on NBC. Dr Beckett is a physicist who leaps through spacetime while conducting his experiments in time travel.

If you’ve seen the television film Marilyn and Me, you’d know who is Susan Griffiths. This film came out in 1991 and had Susan playing the role of Marilyn Monroe. Everyone who watched the film was mesmerized by her uncanny resemblance to the ‘blonde bombshell’ of Hollywood. If this film had been released in recent times, it would’ve probably been big in the media.

The social media would’ve been busy talking about it and Susan could’ve attained superstardom. The film tells you about the life of Robert Slatzer. He was an American writer who claimed that he had married Marilyn Monroe in Mexico.

The journey to becoming an actress

Susan grew up in South California. When she was 11 years of age, she moved to Utah. During her teenage years, she had brunette hair and people used to say that she looked like Marilyn Monroe. She ignored what they said, as she didn’t know at the time who Marilyn Monroe really was.

Later, she became a Marilyn impersonator. She moved back to Los Angeles from Las Vegas. To pursue an acting career as herself, Susan dyed her hair black. After spending a year in Los Angeles and being represented by a commercial agent, she got Marilyn and Me.

Portraying Marilyn Monroe on the screen

The film is certainly worth watching for the enchanting performance of Susan Griffiths. However, this is not the only film that portrays her as Marilyn Monroe. She has played the role of the iconic actress in Pulp Fiction and a few other films.

Besides all these films, Susan has also done many stage shows. Before being cast as Marilyn in the film, Susan had a lot of work to do. She mastered the body movements and facial expressions of the actress. This made her role of Marilyn seem more real on the screen.

After Marilyn and Me

Susan played Marilyn Monroe in the 1994 neo-noir black comedy crime film, Pulp Fiction. Nominated for seven Academy Awards, the film was a major critical and commercial success. After this movie, she got a constant flow of jobs. She did her photographic portrayal of Marilyn in Elton John’s Candle in the Wind

She also had some fabulous projects with photographer David LaChapelle, such as Curb Your Enthusiasm and Nip/Tuck. Curb Your Enthusiasm was one of the most memorable projects for her. It gave her the opportunity to spend a couple of days talking to Dustin Hoffman.

Marilyn Monroe is undoubtedly one of the most desirable actresses of all time. It does come as a surprise that she never won an Academy Award. Today, the actress is greatly recognized for her comic subtlety, but she wasn’t considered as talented back then. She received lower pay as compared to her counterparts in Hollywood.

However, many years later, she became renowned for her sex appeal as well as her acting. The American Film Institute recognized her as the sixth greatest female movie star of all time. These are some of her best films you must never miss watching:

1. All About Eve

This film released in 1950 features Marilyn Monroe in one of her earliest dramatic roles. It was entered in the United States National Film Registry in 1990 for preservation. All About Eve is considered widely as one of the best films of all time.

Marilyn plays the role of Miss Casswell in the film. Although she had a small role, she held her own with legends, such as Bette Davis and Anne Baxter. This film received 14 Academy Award nominations in 1951. It was the most number of nominations for any film at the time.

2. Don’t Bother to Knock

A noir psychological thriller, Don’t Bother to Knock received mixed reviews from the critics at the time. Marilyn Monroe played the role of Nell Forbes, a disturbed babysitter. In this 1952 film, she cares for the young daughter of two hotel guests.

Things take an unexpected turn when it is revealed by Bunny that Nell is not a fellow hotel guest. It was noted in many reviews that the blonde bombshell was an odd choice for the dramatic role. She strongly hit back against this opinion throughout her career.

3. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

In this film released in 1953, Monroe co-starred alongside Jane Russell. She had one of her biggest roles in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Her performance in this film is considered to be the most iconic among all her other performances. After watching this film, many among the audiences and critics thought she was a dumb blonde in real life.

She was praised for her comic timing, dancing, and singing in this film. It showed that she had considerable talents. The film is about two showgirls who are best friends. On their trip to Europe, they get into all sorts of trouble on the way.

4. The Seven Year Itch

It is this particular film that made Marilyn Monroe extremely popular. The film was released in 1954 and contains one of the most popular scenes in film history. It is the widely-known ‘subway grate’ scene. It shows her white dress being blown over her head by the air from a passing subway train below.

This scene also became one of the most famous photographs of all time. In this film, she plays the role of a girl living upstairs from Tom Ewell. He plays the protagonist Richard Sherman in the film. He is portrayed as a businessman who is left alone in Manhattan for the summer.

5. Bus Stop

This 1956 film was her first starring role in a dramatic film and got mixed reviews. Monroe’s performance in Bus Stop was praised by many critics. It was a brave move for this actress to perform a role that made her look less talented. The pale makeup that she wears in this film also dampened her beauty. In this film, she appears to have made an attempt to be taken seriously by Hollywood.

Marilyn Monroe was one of the immensely popular sex symbols in the mid-20th century. Even after so many years of her death, she continues to be one of pop culture’s greatest icons. Over the decades, many actresses have posed as Marilyn Monroe at some point in their film careers.

It is a matter of prestige for actresses, it seems, to pose like Marilyn Monroe. While some of them portrayed her really well, others were not so impressive. Here are some of the actresses who received a lot of praise for their portrayal of the blonde bombshell:

1. Misty Rowe

Born Misty Rose Thornton, she is known for her role in the television series ‘Hee Haw’. She had many television appearances in the 1980s, including the ones in the ‘Fantasy Island’ episodes. And also portrayed a country music singer in ‘Airwolf’.

Her first film was ‘The Last Tycoon’, which was released in 1976. She played the role of Marilyn Monroe in the experimental film by Nicolas Roeg titled ‘Insignificance’. This British comedy was released in 1985. In most of the parts of this film, she wears Monroe’s iconic white halter dress.

3. Susan Griffiths

In 1991, she portrayed Marilyn Monroe in the American television film, ‘Marilyn & Me’. Griffiths was chosen for this role owing to her uncanny resemblance to Monroe. This film is about the life of Robert Slatzer, who claimed to have married the blonde bombshell.

He was an American writer. According to Slatzer, the two had met when she had just begun her acting career. In the film, Marilyn is shown as being torn apart between her lover and her career.

4. Melody Anderson

The most high-profile role of this actress was that of Dale Arden in the 1980’s ‘Flash Gordon’ adaptation. Later, she starred with Chuck Norris in ‘Firewalker’, which was released in 1986. Her training in acting got her different kinds of roles in films and television series.

She played the much-desired role of Marilyn Monroe in ‘Marilyn & Bobby: Her Final Affair. This television film was released in 1993. Her last appearance on television was in 1995 as a guest star in ‘Burke’s Law’. She is now a Canadian social worker and public speaker. She often speaks on the impact of addiction on families.

5. Barbara Niven

This American actress, producer, and writer is known for her television roles in ‘Pensacola: Wings of Gold’. She starred as Marilyn Monroe in the HBO film, The Rat Pack. She played a leading role in ‘A Perfect Ending’, an independent film released in 2012. Barbara is now a media trainer, motivational speaker, and animal rights activist.
